How to Write a Thesis ?

Writing the thesis could mean the end of a university student’s training or the beginning of a longer one. In fact, there is a thesis for the three-year degree, one for the master’s degree and / or specialist, one for the master’s degree or the research doctorate.

However, often many students do not really know where to start: an effective draft, in fact, presupposes the knowledge of some basic rules. As is known, the degree thesis must be organized in such a way as to be able to expound the arguments in a clear and fluent manner, so that it becomes of fundamental importance to learn first to write thoroughly its index. Let’s see how to do it, step by step.

First of all, to write a thesis and set it appropriately, the first thing to do is the layout of the cover (title page). The main information to be reported is as follows: above and in the center (slightly shifted by calculating the space needed for the binding) the wording and information of your university will be given, specifying the address of studies followed.

At the center, in larger dimensions, the title of the thesis will be written: then, in the lower left the name of the person who wrote it and on the right the name of the speaker. However, always try to organize your work by preparing an outline of the topics to be treated in the order in which you intend to treat them. Sketch a division into chapters.

This “hard work” will be useful for you to do the next job, but obviously will always be subject to changes during the writing of the thesis. Introduction and conclusion will be written last. Starting from the first page of the thesis, you can also write thanks (if you want, but it is not mandatory!) For one or more people who have helped you find the information used for the drafting, or you can dedicate it to a particular person (the your parents, a grandfather etc).

At this point, you can proceed with its elaboration: first, however, it will be necessary to draw up the index, which will be very useful for the organization of the paper. Remember that, even if the index will be placed on the first pages of the thesis, it will be the last thing that will be completed definitively! Obviously, the main purpose of an index will be to then use it as a guide for identifying the various chapters that make up the thesis itself. It must be organized as a real list that identifies the main topics (chapter titles) and possible sub-chapters.

The former will be displayed with a larger font size (better if in bold), highlighted by an increasing number (1 … 2 … 3 … 4 … 5 etc.), while the sub chapters will show the main chapter number pointed to and with the addition of further increasing numbers (1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc). To give a touch of elegance to the elaborate, you could also use Roman numerals.

Finally, always on the same line of the chapter but more to the right, the number of pages will be reported: even if this can be considered definitive only after having finished defining the thesis. The latest editions of Microsoft Office should have a function that does it automatically, otherwise you will have to manually return all the numbers and titles of the chapters, paragraphs, subparagraphs, introduction, conclusion and bibliography.
